Abu Dhabi Police issues public safety advisory for drivers in Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi Police have issued a warning to motorists against unsafe transportation of bicycles using trailers, cautioning that violations could result in fines of up to AED 1,000 under UAE traffic laws. The warning was issued by the Traffic and Security Patrols Directorate as part of the emirate’s seasonal “Our Winter Is Safe and Enjoyable” road safety campaign, which aims to reduce accidents and enhance compliance during periods of increased outdoor and recreational activity.

Mandatory Safety Requirements for Bicycle Trailers

Authorities stressed that drivers transporting bicycles must fully comply with trailer safety regulations, which include:

  • Installing a third licence plate at the rear of the trailer
  • Ensuring the trailer is fitted with rear lights, warning signals, and reflectors
  • Activating hazard lights on both the towing vehicle and the trailer
  • Displaying warning and reflective stickers clearly on the trailer
  • Remaining in the right lane at all times while towing

In addition, the trailer’s width must not exceed 260 centimetres, and its length must not be longer than the towing vehicle.

Traffic Fines and Legal Penalties

Under Article 96 of the Federal Traffic Law, towing a vehicle, boat, or cart in an unsafe or unsecured manner carries a fine of AED 1,000.

Violations under Article 97, which relate to the absence of lights on the rear or sides of a trailer, are punishable by a AED 500 fine.

A further penalty of AED 400 may be imposed under Article 27(B) for any act that obscures or interferes with the visibility of licence plate numbers.

Increased Enforcement During Winter Season

The Traffic and Security Patrols Directorate confirmed that traffic monitoring and enforcement efforts have been intensified, particularly during the winter season when recreational cycling and travel activity increases across the emirate.

Abu Dhabi Police said legal action will be taken against any vehicle found in violation of trailer safety laws, underscoring the importance of compliance to protect road users and prevent avoidable accidents. Drivers were urged to familiarise themselves with towing regulations and ensure all safety requirements are met before transporting bicycles or recreational equipment on public roads.

Why This Matters

  • Prevents accidents caused by unstable or poorly marked trailers.
  • Protects cyclists, motorists, and pedestrians.
  • Supports Abu Dhabi’s wider road safety and public awareness initiatives.
