Ambitious initiative by Sunny Varkeyu aims to unite one million schools worldwide to tackle climate change, hunger, education in crisis, and community leadership.
Education pioneer and philanthropist Sunny Varkey has officially launched the 1 Million Schools Campaign, a landmark global initiative designed to mobilise schools worldwide to drive meaningful social and environmental change.
Unveiled at SPARK.Dubai, the campaign launched by Sunny Varkey seeks to unite one million schools over the next five years, creating a powerful international network committed to addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges — from climate change and food insecurity to education disruption and community leadership.
The initiative calls on schools to take action across four initial focus areas:
climate education, food insecurity, education in crisis, and community leadership, with additional themes to be introduced as the movement evolves.
Speaking at the launch, Sunny Varkey, Founder of the Varkey Foundation and GEMS Education, highlighted the transformative power of schools as agents of change.
“Every day, schools — through their heroic teachers and students — are changing lives, often against the odds. The 1 Million Schools Campaign connects that courage and creativity across borders, transforming it into a global force for good,” he said.
“If one school can change a community, imagine what one million schools can achieve together.”
The campaign aims to harness the collective influence of schools to support families and communities, advance sustainability efforts, combat poverty, and address global illiteracy. Schools around the world are invited to join by committing to tangible actions within one of the campaign’s focus areas or by supporting the expansion of existing, teacher-led initiatives already making an impact.
How Schools Can Participate
Schools can enrol via the Varkey Foundation’s website and are encouraged to share their involvement using the hashtag #1MillionSchools, while nominating other institutions to help the movement grow organically.
Participating schools will gain access to global peer learning networks, collaborative platforms, and international visibility, supported by the Foundation’s decade-long experience through initiatives such as the Global Teacher Prize, Global Student Prize, and the newly launched Global Schools Prize, for which applications remain open until 09th February.
Flagship Initiatives Driving Impact
The campaign launches with several high-impact flagship projects, including:
- The Climate Action Project – A six-week global programme enabling students aged three to 21 to collaborate on environmental topics, reaching over 7 million students across 182 countries.
- Build the Change – A monthly challenge in partnership with LEGO, encouraging schools to design solutions for challenges such as air pollution and climate-resilient urban spaces.
- Writing Our Future, Together – A global pledge initiative promoting everyday environmental actions, from reducing waste to recycling clothing.
- The National School Pantry Network – A UK-based programme supporting schools in addressing student hunger through dignified, practical solutions.
- EduSpots – A community-led initiative establishing digital learning hubs using tablets, WhatsApp, and mobile learning applications.
Collectively, these initiatives showcase inclusive, scalable, and locally relevant models of school-led change, with the campaign expected to expand its portfolio over time.
Creativity, Technology, and the Future of Education
The SPARK.Dubai audience also heard from global creative leaders, including Grammy Award-winning musician Nile Rodgers, artistic director and choreographer Carlos Acosta, and musician Matteo Bocelli, who explored how schools can nurture creativity in the age of artificial intelligence.
Live performances by dancers from Acosta Danza Academy and technology showcases by students from the GEMS School of Research and Innovation highlighted the intersection of education, creativity, and emerging technologies — from intelligent learning robots to AI-powered classroom avatars.
With the launch of the 1 Million Schools Campaign, Sunny Varkey has set in motion a bold vision for collective action, positioning education at the heart of global progress and long-term societal transformation.
