Expansion into high-density districts underscores the capital’s ambition to lead global smart transport innovation

Abu Dhabi expands its robotaxi network into new high-density districts as trips surge 150% in 2025, reinforcing its leadership in smart and autonomous mobility.

Abu Dhabi has announced a major expansion of its robotaxi services, extending autonomous transport operations into new high-density districts as demand for next-generation mobility solutions accelerates across the emirate.

The expansion reflects Abu Dhabi’s broader strategy to strengthen its smart mobility ecosystem, support sustainability objectives, and deliver safe, efficient, technology-led transport services at scale.

The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), an affiliate of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, confirmed that robotaxi operations are now being rolled out in Khalifa City, Masdar City, and Rabdan.

New autonomous routes will also connect the Abu Dhabi Corniche with the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, significantly widening access for both residents and visitors.

The announcement was made on the sidelines of the Unmanned Systems Exhibition and the Simulation and Training Exhibition, two flagship platforms showcasing advances in autonomous and smart systems technologies.

Since its commercial launch in 2021, the robotaxi service has steadily expanded across Yas Island, Al Saadiyat Island, Al Reem Island, Al Maryah Island, and Zayed International Airport, laying the foundation for emirate-wide deployment.

The service is operated commercially by WeRide and Uber, in collaboration with local operator Tawasul Transport, under approved regulatory permits.

According to ITC, the next phase of growth will include a significant expansion of the autonomous vehicle fleet to meet rising demand. Since launch, robotaxi trips have surged by nearly 150 per cent during 2025, driven by earlier network expansions and increasing public confidence in autonomous driving technology.

The authority also confirmed that the autonomous fleet has achieved a 99.9 per cent safety rate, reflecting rigorous operational standards and close coordination with the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council and other development partners.

Ongoing investments are being made to upgrade monitoring and control systems, enhance next-generation connectivity, and ensure a secure, reliable operating environment for autonomous vehicles. As global cities race to redefine urban mobility, Abu Dhabi’s latest robotaxi expansion reinforces the emirate’s commitment to smart infrastructure, sustainable transport, and leadership in advanced mobility technologies—positioning the capital as a benchmark for autonomous transport deployment worldwide.
