Dubai Autism Center: Sustainability partnership reinforces inclusion, well-being, and community empowerment across Dubai
The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has reinforced its commitment to social responsibility by supporting the Dubai Autism Center’s 20th Autism Awareness Campaign, organised by the Dubai Autism Centre as a Sustainability Partner, marking a significant milestone in advancing inclusivity and awareness for People of Determination across Dubai.
Held under the patronage of Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the campaign is part of a long-standing initiative to promote greater understanding, inclusion, and support for individuals with autism. The programme is launched annually on World Autism Awareness Day on 2 April, bringing together government entities, private sector organisations, and the wider community to drive awareness and meaningful change.
This year’s campaign marks two decades of sustained efforts by the Dubai Autism Centre to shift perspectives from basic accessibility towards adaptive and inclusive environments that respond to the unique needs of individuals with autism. The initiative seeks to create a more dynamic and supportive ecosystem that empowers People of Determination to participate actively in society.
DEWA’s involvement as Sustainability Partner reflects its broader strategy of supporting initiatives that enhance quality of life, social wellbeing, and environmental sustainability. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, highlighted that the organisation remains committed to building a People of Determination-friendly city, in line with Dubai’s long-term development goals and the objectives of the Dubai Social Agenda 33.
He explained that DEWA works closely with partners to develop innovative pathways that enable individuals with autism to integrate into society, unlocking their full potential through inclusive programmes and services. The organisation’s efforts focus on delivering high-quality initiatives that promote psychological stability, social engagement, and overall well-being for People of Determination.
Officials emphasised that campaigns such as this play a vital role in enhancing awareness not only among individuals but also across institutions, including schools and workplaces. By equipping organisations with a better understanding and tools, the initiative helps create autism-friendly environments that support education, employment, and social participation.
The Dubai Autism Centre expressed appreciation for DEWA’s continued support, noting that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to building an inclusive society. Mohammed Al Emadi, Director General of the centre, highlighted that DEWA’s efforts demonstrate strong leadership in corporate social responsibility and community engagement.
He pointed to DEWA’s achievement in having several of its facilities certified as autism-friendly environments, underlining the organisation’s dedication to creating spaces that cater to the needs of all members of society. This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure that public and private spaces across Dubai become more accessible and inclusive.
The campaign itself is designed to go beyond awareness, focusing on practical solutions and community collaboration. Activities typically include educational workshops, outreach programmes, and public engagement initiatives that aim to improve understanding of autism and encourage inclusive practices.
Since its establishment in 2001, the Dubai Autism Centre has played a key role in advancing education, rehabilitation, and awareness initiatives for individuals with autism and their families. Its annual awareness campaign, which has been running since 2006, has become a cornerstone initiative in promoting community engagement and inclusion across the UAE.
The importance of such initiatives is further highlighted by the growing global focus on inclusive development and social sustainability, in which empowering People of Determination is recognised as a fundamental aspect of building resilient and cohesive societies.
DEWA’s participation also aligns with Dubai’s broader vision of becoming a global model for inclusive urban development, where infrastructure, services, and policies are designed to support all segments of society equally. By integrating sustainability with social impact, the organisation is contributing to a more balanced and forward-looking development model.
Industry observers note that partnerships between government entities and community organisations are essential in driving long-term change. By combining resources, expertise, and outreach capabilities, such collaborations can create scalable and impactful solutions that benefit society as a whole.
Looking ahead, the continued success of the Dubai Autism Awareness Campaign is expected to further strengthen Dubai’s position as a leading inclusive city, where innovation and compassion come together to support diverse communities.
As the campaign marks its 20th edition, it stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and sustained commitment in building a society that values inclusion, empowerment, and equal opportunity for all.
