In an outstanding development for the future of smart urban transit, Abu Dhabi Mobility has officially inaugurated a state-of-the-art central control room dedicated to managing and monitoring autonomous vehicle (AV) operations across the emirate. Operating as the Integrated Transport Centre and an affiliate of the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), Abu Dhabi Mobility launched this strategic facility under the direct supervision of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council. The high-profile inauguration was attended by Sheikh Hamdan bin Saeed bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan and Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of DMT, underscoring the government’s commitment to pioneering safe, next-generation transport solutions.

This monumental step aims to significantly enhance direct supervision and effective regulation of the AV sector through highly advanced systems designed for real-time monitoring, complex data analysis, and immediate decision support.

Expanding the Horizons of Autonomous Transit

The launch of this dedicated control room arrives at a critical juncture, coinciding with the rapid and continuous expansion of autonomous vehicle services across the emirate. As self-driving cars shift from limited trials to wider public deployment, developing robust regulatory mechanisms that keep pace with this exponential growth has become an absolute priority for DMT and Abu Dhabi Mobility.

According to official statements, the newly established control room ensures that all monitoring and emergency response activities perfectly align with designated schedules and strict regulatory requirements. By allowing the immediate, real-time tracking of AV movement, operators can trigger a rapid response to any operational anomalies or emergency situations in strict accordance with approved safety procedures.

At the technological core of this facility is a centralized supervision system that incorporates an integrated digital platform known as AViTOMS (Autonomous Vehicles Integrated Testing, Operations, and Management System). This powerful digital infrastructure enables the continuous tracking of vehicle locations, speeds, and specific routing. Furthermore, the AViTOMS platform directly manages the crucial process of issuing permits and officially approving operational routes for all licensed AV operators in the capital.

Leadership Perspectives on Smart Mobility

The transition toward fully autonomous urban mobility requires not just cutting-edge technology, but also unparalleled regulatory foresight. Speaking on the strategic importance of the new facility, Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director General of Abu Dhabi Mobility (ITC), highlighted the emirate’s proactive approach to comprehensive risk management.

“The inauguration of the central control room represents a key milestone in the development of the regulatory framework for autonomous vehicles in Abu Dhabi,” Dr. AlGhfeli stated. “It responds to the rapid adoption of smart mobility technologies, which require an advanced supervisory system to ensure real-time monitoring and efficient risk management. Through this control room, we establish an integrated approach combining technical capabilities and regulatory frameworks, enhancing the emirate’s readiness to operate autonomous vehicles within a safe and organised environment that builds trust and road safety.”

Echoing this sentiment, Hamad Adel Al Afeefi, Executive Director of the Intelligent Transportation Systems Sector, emphasized the broader impact on the emirate’s overarching digital transformation agenda.

“The centre’s initiatives reflect a significant shift toward an integrated digital services model that strengthens Abu Dhabi’s leadership in the smart transportation sector,” Al Afeefi noted.

A Secure Future for Urban Transport

By actively covering all AV services operated by licensed providers within the emirate, the central control room acts as the ultimate guardian of public road safety. It enables comprehensive trip recording, detailed journey analysis, and highly coordinated emergency response management in active collaboration with relevant local authorities. In addition, the generation of periodic, data-driven reports will allow engineers to constantly optimize operational efficiency and improve routing networks based on real-world testing.

Through the combined visionary efforts of DMT and Abu Dhabi Mobility, the capital is effectively cementing its position as a global leader in intelligent transportation. Fostering a meticulously regulated, highly supervised environment guarantees that the massive rollout of AV technology will be executed with the highest conceivable standards of safety, efficiency, and unwavering public trust.
