There is a category of financial institution that does not get enough coverage in the UAE business press relative to its actual importance. Family offices, the private investment and wealth management structures of ultra-high-net-worth families, have been quietly accumulating assets, building sophisticated investment capabilities and expanding their global reach from UAE bases for years. The combination of factors that has driven that growth is now more powerful than it has ever been, and the family office landscape in the UAE in 2026 looks substantially different from what it did in 2020.

The UAE has an estimated 300 to 400 family offices operating across Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with total assets under management estimated at several hundred billion dollars across the ecosystem. DIFC has become the premier domicile for family offices in the region, with a regulatory framework specifically designed for the structure and a community of advisors, lawyers, bankers and co-investors that has developed around it. The DIFC Family Office Programme, launched in 2023, has attracted significant international family office relocations alongside the domestic base that was already there.

Who Is Driving the Growth

The growth in UAE family offices comes from two distinct pools. The first is established regional wealth: Gulf families that have been managing significant assets for generations and are professionalising their investment operations, moving from informal structures toward institutional-grade governance, risk management and diversification. These families are increasingly hiring CIOs with institutional investment backgrounds, building dedicated teams for private equity, venture capital and real estate, and establishing formal investment committees with proper governance frameworks.

The second pool is the new wealth that has flowed into the UAE through the millionaire migration of recent years. Entrepreneurs who sold technology companies in Europe, India or the United States and relocated to the UAE for tax, lifestyle and connectivity reasons are establishing family offices here as their primary investment vehicle. These founders typically bring a technology and venture orientation, a global network and a risk appetite that is different from traditional Gulf family office investing. The interaction between these two pools, the established regional wealth and the newly arrived international wealth, is producing a family office ecosystem that is genuinely diverse in its investment philosophy and its geographic reach.

“The UAE has become one of the world’s fastest-growing family office hubs, driven by its tax environment, political stability, geographic connectivity, and the regulatory infrastructure that DIFC and ADGM have built to accommodate sophisticated private wealth structures.”

— Campden Wealth, Middle East Family Office Report 2025 (November 2025)

What Family Offices Are Actually Investing In

The investment mix of UAE family offices has shifted significantly over the past five years. Real estate remains a core allocation, both in the UAE and internationally, but the share going to alternative assets including private equity, venture capital, private credit and digital assets has grown substantially. Several UAE family offices have become significant LPs in regional and global venture funds. Others have built direct investment teams that co-invest alongside institutional funds in growth-stage companies across technology, healthcare and sustainability.

Private credit is one of the most interesting areas of growth. As traditional bank lending to mid-market companies has become more constrained by regulatory capital requirements, family offices with long-term capital and flexibility have stepped in as lenders, earning yields that are meaningfully above public market fixed income with security structures that give them downside protection. That is a sophisticated institutional investment strategy being executed with increasing competence by a growing number of UAE family offices.

“The most sophisticated UAE family offices have moved well beyond passive investment in public markets and real estate. They are operating as institutional investors with permanent capital, long time horizons, and the flexibility to access opportunities that closed-ended funds cannot reach.”

— DIFC Family Office Annual Report 2025 (December 2025)

The UAE family office ecosystem in 2026 is one of the most dynamic in the world. It is growing in number, in sophistication and in global influence. The families and the advisors building it right now are establishing institutions that will shape the region’s economic landscape for decades to come.
