In a phenomenal move designed to safeguard the nation’s profound agricultural legacy, the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority (ADHA) has officially announced the launch of the “Documentation of New Date Palm Varieties” project. This highly strategic initiative was unveiled during the 22nd edition of the Liwa Dates Festival, a premier cultural event currently underway until 23 July 2026 in Liwa City, Al Dhafra Region. Operating under the powerful slogan “Scientific Documentation… Protecting Rights… Supporting Sustainability,” the project aims to fundamentally revolutionize how the United Arab Emirates catalogs and preserves its most vital crop.

ADHA Unveils the "Documentation of New Date Palm Varieties" at the 22nd Liwa Dates Festival

A Vision Rooted in Heritage and Science

The timing of this announcement at the Liwa Dates Festival is no coincidence. As one of the country’s biggest agricultural and heritage events, the festival has already seen farmers from across the UAE submit nearly three tonnes of fresh rutab (dates) on its opening day. Amidst this massive celebration of the summer harvest, the ADHA introduced the Documentation of New Date Palm Varieties project to perfectly bridge the gap between ancient, inherited farming practices and rigorous modern botanical science.

Highlighting the profound significance of this endeavor, Faris Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Chairman of the ADHA, spoke passionately about the project’s direct alignment with the nation’s long-term environmental and cultural goals.

“The launch of the project reflects the wise vision and unwavering support of the UAE’s leadership for the agricultural sector, particularly the blessed date palm tree, which represents a cornerstone of the United Arab Emirates’ national identity and cultural heritage,” Al Mazrouei stated.

He further elaborated on the long-term operational impact of the initiative, adding:

“Documenting new date palm varieties is a significant step toward standardising the conditions and criteria that support the development of the country’s agricultural heritage sector through a modern scientific approach. This further strengthens Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading global center for heritage sustainability and agricultural innovation.”

Celebrating Farmer Innovations and Protecting Rights

For decades, local farmers have engaged in meticulous cross-breeding, natural selection, and careful cultivation techniques to yield unique date species with distinct flavors, textures, and climatic resilience. However, without a formalized, centralized registry, many of these incredible agricultural achievements remained undocumented and unprotected. The Documentation of New Date Palm Varieties by the ADHA seeks to permanently change this landscape by institutionalizing the recognition of these agricultural breakthroughs.

Abdullah Mubarak Al Muhairi, Acting Director General of the ADHA, emphasized the community-centric focus of the program. He noted that the project is designed to directly empower the local cultivators who serve as the true backbone of the region’s food security network.

“The project celebrates farmers’ innovations by officially recognising and cataloging new date palm varieties according to specific standards and requirements,” Al Muhairi emphasized. “This will help preserve the UAE’s rich agricultural heritage and ensure it is passed on to future generations as a distinctive Emirati product.”

The Impact on the Liwa Dates Festival and Beyond

The ongoing 22nd Liwa Dates Festival provides the ultimate launching pad for the Documentation of New Date Palm Varieties. With 23 distinct competitions and 295 prizes worth more than AED 8 million up for grabs this year, the festival is a thriving hub of intense agricultural competition. On the opening day alone, the “Largest Date Bunch” competition saw a winning entry weighing an incredible 113.2kg.

Now, under the expert guidance of the ADHA, farmers have a powerful added incentive beyond immediate prize money: the opportunity to have their proprietary date cultivars scientifically recognized, thoroughly documented, and protected under formal intellectual property frameworks. By establishing rigorous evaluation criteria, the ADHA ensures that only the most viable, stable, and distinctive species are added to the official national registry.

This not only protects the rights of the dedicated farmers who spent years developing these crops but also supports long-term ecological sustainability by actively promoting genetic diversity within the palm plantations. As the Liwa Dates Festival continues to draw thousands of visitors to the Al Dhafra Region, the Documentation of New Date Palm Varieties project stands out as a phenomenal leap forward. Through the dedicated efforts of the ADHA, the UAE is successfully proving that it can honor its deep-rooted cultural past while aggressively pursuing scientific innovation in the agricultural sector.
