In a phenomenal leap forward for global renewable infrastructure, Abu Dhabi clean energy powerhouse Al Masdar has officially commenced commercial operations at its newest battery energy storage facility in Rochdale. By activating its second major battery energy storage system (BESS) in the United Kingdom, the company is forcefully driving the nation’s energy security forward and accelerating the transition toward a highly resilient electricity grid.
This momentous launch represents the latest critical milestone in a planned £1 billion investment program directed toward UK BESS projects, solidifying the UAE’s strategic footprint in the European energy market.
Powering Communities and Stabilizing the Grid
The new Rochdale plant boasts a massive 35-megawatt (MW) / 70-megawatt-hour (MWh) capacity. Operating on two charging and discharging cycles per day, the cutting-edge facility will generate enough clean, reliable power to sustain 35,000 homes daily.
However, the value of BESS technology extends far beyond simple storage. The facility serves as a vital balancing mechanism for the UK’s electricity network. By instantly absorbing excess power during periods of low demand and dispatching it during peak usage, the plant responds to supply fluctuations within milliseconds. This incredible flexibility is essential for integrating unpredictable renewable energy sources, like wind and solar, into a modern, heavily digitized grid.

Driving the £1 Billion Pipeline Forward
Following its strategic acquisition of Arlington Energy in 2022, Al Masdar boldly committed to developing a 3 gigawatt-hours (GWh) pipeline of BESS projects across the UK. This massive portfolio directly supports the UK government’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan, which aims to deploy up to 27GW of battery storage by the end of the decade.
The Rochdale facility directly follows the successful rollout of the company’s 20MW/40MWh Welkin Road project in Stockport, which launched last December. The Abu Dhabi energy titan is already looking ahead, with combined 150MW/300MWh projects currently under development in Chesterfield and Cardiff.
Emphasizing the long-term vision behind these infrastructure investments, Husain Al Meer, Executive Director, Global Offshore Wind & UK at Al Masdar, stated:
“Beginning commercial operations at our Rochdale facility is a key milestone in our £1 billion commitment to UK battery storage. As electricity demand grows and renewable generation continues to expand, battery storage is becoming an increasingly vital component of maintaining a secure, reliable and affordable electricity network. Our continuing rollout of our £1 billion pipeline reflects Masdar’s long-term commitment to the UK, and we are proud to be supporting the country’s energy security by delivering the flexible infrastructure needed to enable greater renewable energy deployment.”
A Global Portfolio of Clean Energy
As rapid electrification and the exponential growth of artificial intelligence (AI) drive global electricity demand to record highs, Al Masdar is forcefully asserting its dominance in the renewable sector. Back home in Abu Dhabi, the company recently broke ground on an unprecedented gigascale solar and battery project designed to deliver 1GW of baseload power.
Beyond battery infrastructure, the company remains a dominant player in the UK’s offshore wind sector, co-investing in massive projects like the 1.4GW East Anglia THREE facility alongside Iberdrola. By prioritizing highly disciplined investments across solar, onshore wind, offshore wind, and advanced BESS technologies, Al Masdar is rapidly paving a definitive pathway toward achieving an astonishing 100GW of global energy capacity by 2030.
