In a strategic move that significantly broadens its footprint across Europe, Etihad Airways has officially forged a landmark codeshare agreement with TAROM, the national airline of Romania. Signed during the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, this collaboration promises to redefine connectivity between the Middle East and one of Europe’s fastest-growing regions. By linking its global network with TAROM’s established regional routes, Etihad is unlocking a seamless travel experience for passengers, effectively bridging Abu Dhabi and Eastern Europe in unprecedented ways.
The cornerstone of this partnership is the unparalleled access it provides to international travelers. Under the new agreement, guests flying with Etihad can book a single ticket that connects them seamlessly through Bucharest to ten distinct destinations. This includes six major cities within Romania: Baia Mare, Cluj-Napoca, Iasi, Oradea, Suceava, and Timisoara. Furthermore, the codeshare extends beyond Romania’s borders to include four key Eastern European capitals: Belgrade, Budapest, Chisinau, and Sofia. This means passengers can enjoy the immense convenience of single-ticket journeys, with their baggage checked completely through to their final stop, eliminating the traditional logistical hurdles of regional flight transfers.
Timing is a critical component of this ambitious aviation strategy. The Etihad and TAROM codeshare lays the groundwork for Etihad’s highly anticipated new direct service between Abu Dhabi and Bucharest, which is officially slated to launch on December 17, 2026. For travelers starting their journey in Romania, this upcoming route serves as a vital gateway to Abu Dhabi, offering onward access to Etihad’s extensive network spanning the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Conversely, the deal positions Romania as an enticing destination for Etihad’s global clientele, highlighting its emerging economic status and tourism appeal, which ranges from the medieval architecture of Transylvania to the natural beauty of the Carpathian Mountains and the Danube Delta.
Executives from both airlines have emphasized the mutual benefits and immense scale of this collaboration. Arik De, Etihad Airways’ Chief Revenue & Commercial Officer, highlighted the strategic depth of the alliance: “TAROM gives Etihad real depth in Eastern Europe: a flag carrier shaped by more than seven decades of European aviation, and an established network reaching across the country and the wider region. Launching this codeshare ahead of our own Bucharest service means we enter a fast-growing market with genuine scale from day one.”
Similarly, TAROM’s leadership views the partnership as a crucial step in its international expansion. Mircea Nicolae Cotoros, Chief Commercial Officer at TAROM, stated: “This codeshare with Etihad Airways extends TAROM’s international reach and gives passengers a new connection between Bucharest and Abu Dhabi. It strengthens the link between Romania and the Middle East, supports the continued growth of our network, and fosters cultural and economic exchanges.”
From an industry perspective, this deal solidifies Etihad’s reputation as a powerhouse of connectivity outside of traditional airline alliances. With the integration of TAROM, Etihad’s robust partner network now encompasses 47 codeshare agreements and over 130 interline partners. This roster stands as the largest of any non-alliance airline, empowering guests with single-ticket access to more than 350 destinations across the globe.
Ultimately, this agreement represents far more than a simple alignment of flight schedules. It is a calculated, mutually beneficial bridge between Abu Dhabi and Eastern Europe, designed to stimulate tourism, streamline corporate travel, and foster robust economic integration. Travelers seeking to explore the diverse landscapes of Eastern Europe, whether it be the historic streets of Sofia, the vibrant culture of Budapest, or the growing commercial hubs of Romania, now have a simplified, premium path via Abu Dhabi. As the aviation industry continues to navigate a complex global landscape, Etihad’s latest deal proves that strategic, bilateral partnerships remain the most effective and efficient route to unlocking new horizons and delivering exceptional value to global passengers.
