Abu Dhabi’s community is lacing up for a greener future as Tadweer Group prepares to host the highly anticipated second edition of ECORUN. Scheduled to take place inside the expansive, climate-controlled corridors of the iconic Yas Mall on Sunday, 5th July 2026, this inspiring indoor sporting event promises to bring together families, seasoned runners, and passionate community members in a unified stand against single-use plastics. Building significantly on the massive success of its inaugural edition, the 2026 ECORUN perfectly encapsulates Tadweer Group’s unwavering commitment to transforming environmental awareness into tangible, meaningful community action. The event aims to encourage responsible everyday choices, emphasize the critical importance of reducing plastic waste, and inspire long-term sustainable behaviors across Abu Dhabi and beyond.

A Summer Race with a Lasting Purpose
Taking place during the globally recognized “Plastic Free July” movement, this event provides the perfect platform to champion ecological responsibility while maintaining active lifestyles during the peak of the UAE summer. By hosting the race indoors, the organizers have ensured a comfortable, safe, and family-friendly environment that removes the barrier of extreme outdoor heat.
This year’s edition of the race has been meticulously designed to reflect its core sustainability message in actual practice, ensuring that the event’s environmental footprint remains as minimal as possible. Moving beyond mere advocacy, the organizers have implemented concrete, eco-friendly measures. For instance, the official runner T-shirts will be manufactured entirely from recycled materials, ensuring that fashion meets sustainability. Furthermore, the participation medals awarded at the finish line will be exclusively crafted from recycled zinc alloy, serving as a lasting testament to the value of circular economy principles.
The indoor race at Yas Mall will also strictly limit reliance on single-use plastic across all key touchpoints of the venue, with organizers encouraging runners to bring their own reusable water bottles to utilize the various refill stations. To guarantee maximum sustainability, recyclable materials will be systematically collected, sorted, and processed immediately after the run concludes, ensuring a genuinely plastic-free environment.
Turning Awareness into Practical Action
The overarching goal of the event is to foster a profound cultural shift in how residents view their environmental footprint, aligning closely with Abu Dhabi’s ambitious vision to divert 80% of waste from landfills by the end of the decade. Abdulwahed Juma, Executive Director of Communications and Awareness at Tadweer Group, articulated the driving philosophy behind this community-centric initiative.
“ECORUN reflects Tadweer Group’s commitment to engaging the community as an active partner in turning environmental awareness into practical action,” stated Juma. “Reducing single-use plastics begins with awareness, but meaningful progress is shaped by the choices people make every day. By bringing together families, runners and residents, this initiative encourages more responsible behaviours and reinforces the role of community participation in supporting a cleaner, more sustainable Abu Dhabi.”
His words underscore that while government entities can provide the infrastructure for advanced waste management, the true catalyst for a circular economy relies heavily on the daily lifestyle choices made by the general public.
Race Categories for Every Fitness Level
Inclusivity is at the absolute heart of the ECORUN, ensuring that everyone can participate regardless of their athletic background. Participants registering for the event can choose from three distinct race categories: the 2.5km distance, which is ideal for families and beginners, the 5km run serving as a balanced challenge for community members, and the 10km challenge designed for experienced runners pushing their endurance limits. These varied distances and age groups have been thoughtfully designed to welcome young children, active families, first-time runners, and highly experienced athletes alike.
As the morning progresses, the vibrant atmosphere inside the venue will culminate in a celebratory awards ceremony. The top three male and female finishers in each respective race category will be officially recognized during the podium presentation, receiving their eco-friendly medals as champions of both fitness and environmental stewardship.
By seamlessly blending health, fitness, and environmental activism, the second edition of this initiative is poised to be an unforgettable community gathering, proving that taking steps toward a cleaner planet can be an active, engaging, and deeply rewarding experience.
