UAE UK trade partnership 2026 business
The UAE-UK bilateral trade relationship, valued at over $30 billion annually, is positioned to expand further once the UK-GCC Free Trade Agreement concludes.

The bilateral trade and investment relationship between the UAE and the United Kingdom is now valued at more than $30 billion annually. That figure, confirmed at a recent UAE-UK Business Council briefing in London, places the two countries among each other’s most significant trading partners and reflects a relationship that has deepened substantially since the UK’s exit from the European Union created both the need and the mandate for new bilateral economic partnerships. But the more significant number is not the current $30 billion. It is the potential unlocked by the UK-GCC Free Trade Agreement, which when concluded would create preferential market access between the United Kingdom and the six Gulf Cooperation Council member states simultaneously, covering a combined market of more than 60 million consumers with some of the highest per-capita incomes in the world.

The UAE-UK Business Council briefing confirmed that both sides are actively working to move beyond economic recovery mode and accelerate cooperation across the industries expected to shape global growth over the coming decade. The sectors receiving the most attention are technology and AI, financial services, clean energy and healthcare innovation, all areas where both the UAE and the UK have genuine strengths and where collaboration creates more value than competition. The UAE’s investment in UK tech companies, universities and infrastructure through vehicles like Mubadala and ADQ has built institutional relationships that run deeper than trade statistics capture.

“The bilateral trade and investment relationship between the UAE and the United Kingdom, now valued at more than $30 billion annually, continues to be supported by shared investment in innovation, technology, skills and competitiveness. The UK-GCC Free Trade Agreement is expected to unlock further opportunities for long-term economic prosperity.”

What the UK-GCC Free Trade Agreement Would Actually Unlock

The UK-GCC Free Trade Agreement has been under negotiation since 2022 and remains one of the most commercially significant trade deals either side is pursuing. For UAE businesses that export to the UK or source from British suppliers, a concluded FTA would reduce or eliminate tariffs on a wide range of goods categories, simplify rules of origin requirements and create a more structured environment for services trade and investment. The UAE’s growing manufacturing and value-added export base, which as the H1 2026 non-oil trade data shows is now a serious commercial force, would gain preferential access to a UK market of 67 million consumers with strong purchasing power.

For UK businesses operating in or selling into the UAE, an FTA would similarly reduce barriers and create more certain access to a market that is both wealthy and growing. The UAE’s role as a regional hub means that preferential access to the UAE is, in practice, preferential access to a supply chain and distribution network that reaches across the Gulf, South Asia and East Africa. That is a significantly larger commercial opportunity than the UAE’s domestic market alone would suggest.

Why the UAE-UK Relationship Matters Beyond the Numbers

The UAE and the UK share something that goes beyond trade flows and investment figures. They are both, in different ways, betting on openness as an economic strategy. The UAE’s CEPA programme, its free zone model, its visa liberalisation and its regulatory openness to new industries and technologies all reflect a conviction that attracting the best of the world’s talent, capital and businesses is a more durable growth model than protecting domestic incumbents. The UK’s post-Brexit trade strategy reflects a similar conviction, however imperfectly executed in some areas, that bilateral deals built on genuine commercial logic are preferable to membership of a customs union designed around political compromises.

That shared orientation toward openness creates a genuine affinity between the two countries that is reflected in the depth of the business community relationships between them. More British businesses have a UAE presence than any other country outside Europe. More UAE nationals study in UK universities than in those of most other countries. The cultural and business ties are real, and the trade and investment numbers are the commercial expression of something that runs deeper than any single trade agreement. The UK-GCC FTA, when concluded, will formalise and deepen what already exists. For businesses on both sides that understand the opportunity, the work of positioning for that conclusion is worth starting now.

“The UAE’s CEPA strategy has already delivered AED 304.3 billion in H1 2026 trade under active agreements. The UK-GCC Free Trade Agreement, when concluded, would add one of the world’s largest and wealthiest single consumer markets to that preferential access framework, with significant implications for UAE exporters and UK businesses seeking Gulf market access.”
