AtkinsRéalis and ALEC Engineering and Contracting have announced their partnership to deliver Sphere Abu Dhabi, the landmark immersive entertainment destination on Yas Island scheduled to open in 2029. The project was awarded to ALEC by the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi in a construction contract worth $1.7 billion. AtkinsRéalis has been appointed lead multidisciplinary design and supervision consultant. Together, they are responsible for delivering what will be one of the most technically complex entertainment infrastructure projects ever built in the Middle East.
Why These Two Companies for This Project
Building a Sphere is not like building a stadium or a concert hall. The technical demands are of a completely different order. The exosphere alone requires engineering precision at a scale that very few firms in the world have the experience to handle. The interior display system, the audio technology and the structural requirements of a building designed to deliver 16K visuals to every seat simultaneously require design and construction capability that is genuinely specialist.
AtkinsRéalis brings global design authority and has been serving as design consultant on Qiddiya City, Saudi Arabia’s flagship entertainment giga-project, giving it direct experience with next-generation entertainment infrastructure at the scale Sphere demands. ALEC is delivering construction works across several landmark venues at Qiddiya, giving it the same first-hand understanding of what these projects require on the ground. The two organisations are not meeting for the first time on this project. They arrive with a working relationship built on one of the region’s most ambitious construction programmes already underway.

The venue will feature a fully programmable LED exosphere, the same category-defining exterior that turned the Las Vegas original into one of the most photographed structures in the world, alongside a wraparound interior display capable of 16K-resolution visuals and the beamforming audio technology that makes sound feel directional and personal rather than broadcast. The result is a venue where the audience is inside the experience rather than watching it from a distance, which is a fundamentally different proposition from any existing entertainment format.

What It Means for Abu Dhabi’s Entertainment Ambition
Sphere Abu Dhabi is being developed by DCT Abu Dhabi as part of the emirate’s broader strategy to establish Abu Dhabi as a global destination for culture, entertainment and innovation. Yas Island already anchors one of the most concentrated entertainment destinations in the world, home to Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld, Yas Marina Circuit and SeaWorld. Adding Sphere to that cluster creates a proposition that is genuinely without comparison anywhere in the region.
For the international acts and productions that will eventually fill Sphere Abu Dhabi, the venue offers something that does not currently exist in the Middle East: the technology to deliver experiences at the scale that the world’s most ambitious entertainment creators are now designing for.
