A highly promising chapter in international diplomacy is unfolding as the UAE actively accelerates its engagement across the Caribbean and Pacific regions. Reaffirming a deep commitment to sustainable global partnerships, Omar Shehadeh, the Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs to the Caribbean and Pacific States, recently concluded a highly successful official bilateral visit to the Dominican Republic. This exceptional diplomatic mission forms a core pillar of the overarching strategy by the UAE to broaden strategic cooperation, forge robust economic alliances, and address critical environmental challenges alongside its vital allies in the Americas.

UAE Envoy Concludes Successful Visit to the Dominican Republic.

High-Level Engagements in Santo Domingo

The diplomatic visit featured a series of high-profile meetings with top-tier Dominican leadership. Omar Shehadeh was warmly received by Luis Abinader, the President of the Dominican Republic, showcasing the profound mutual respect and growing political alignment between the two nations.

Beyond the presidential reception, the UAE Envoy engaged in extensive, solution-oriented discussions with key cabinet members. These critical dialogues included Roberto Álvarez Gil, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Rubén Arturo Silié Valdez, Vice Minister of Multilateral Affairs; and Hugo Francisco Rivera Fernández, Vice Minister for Economic Affairs and International Cooperation.

The primary focus of these intensive meetings centered on expanding bilateral relations across several dynamic sectors. Both nations identified massive potential for growth in economic cooperation, digital transformation initiatives, and cross-border investment. By aligning their economic visions, the two countries aim to unlock lucrative new trade corridors that will mutually benefit their expanding markets.

According to the official statement released by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the diplomatic teams “exchanged views on regional and international developments and reaffirmed the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation on issues of mutual concern.”

Championing the 2026 UN Water Conference

A central theme of the Envoy’s visit was international environmental cooperation, particularly regarding the escalating crisis of global water scarcity. Throughout his engagements in Santo Domingo, Shehadeh proactively highlighted several upcoming international initiatives proudly hosted by the UAE.

Most notably, the Envoy extended formal invitations to his Dominican counterparts to participate in the highly anticipated 2026 United Nations Water Conference. This monumental environmental summit, which will be co-hosted by the UAE and the Republic of Senegal in Abu Dhabi later this year, aims to aggressively accelerate the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) regarding clean water and sanitation.

During his diplomatic briefings, Shehadeh heavily emphasized the critical role this conference will play in advancing global cooperation on water security and sustainable development. Addressing the unique vulnerabilities of the region, he highlighted how the outcomes of the summit will specifically support and protect Small Island Developing States (SIDS) located throughout the Caribbean and the Pacific.

“He emphasized the conference’s role in advancing global cooperation on water security and sustainable development, including for Small Island Developing States in the Caribbean,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in its official press release detailing the visit.

Building a Resilient Future Together

This successful bilateral visit clearly demonstrates that the UAE views its relationship with the Dominican Republic as far more than just a standard diplomatic engagement. It is a deeply rooted partnership designed to gracefully navigate the complexities of the modern geopolitical landscape.

By focusing on critical mutual interests, ranging from digital modernization and economic investments to pressing climate and water security challenges, the two nations are laying a formidable foundation for long-term prosperity. As the 2026 UN Water Conference rapidly approaches, this unified front between the Middle East and the Caribbean promises to deliver actionable, highly inclusive solutions that will resonate positively on a global scale.
