The streets of Dubai are rapidly transforming into a global blueprint for sustainable mobility, driven by a spectacular surge in electric vehicle infrastructure. At the absolute forefront of this eco-friendly revolution is DEWA and its highly successful Green Charger Initiative, which has dramatically reshaped the way residents commute across the emirate. Since it was officially launched in 2024 by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), the Green Charger Initiative has recorded a notable increase in EV charging activity, serving as a powerful reflection of the steady, impressive growth of electric vehicle adoption throughout Dubai.

DEWA Powers Dubai's Future with the Green Charger Initiative

Supercharging the Electric Vehicle Revolution

The sheer scale of the energy being supplied to the city’s modern automotive fleet is absolutely staggering. Over this short but highly impactful period, DEWA has successfully supplied more than 62,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity exclusively to electric vehicles. To put this massive figure into proper perspective, this energy distribution has directly enabled more than 310 million kilometers of pure EV travel across the region. This remarkable feat was accomplished through a heavily robust and diversified network that seamlessly offers ultra-fast, fast, public, and wall-box chargers to perfectly meet every driver’s unique transit needs.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, highlighted the strategic, long-term importance of this sprawling network. He explicitly told the Emirates News Agency (WAM) that the initiative embodies DEWA’s commitment to supporting the wise leadership’s vision of transforming Dubai into a smart and sustainable city, and enhancing integration between the energy and mobility sectors.

By meticulously developing an advanced and highly reliable electric vehicle charging infrastructure according to the absolute highest international standards, DEWA is aggressively encouraging both individuals and large-scale corporate institutions to eagerly adopt low-emission mobility solutions. The overarching, fundamental goal of the Green Charger Initiative is to significantly reduce the carbon footprint and vastly improve the overall quality of life across the entire emirate.

A Comprehensive Technical Network

To properly support Dubai‘s transition towards a completely low-carbon mobility landscape, DEWA has strategically installed four distinct types of chargers across its comprehensive smart grid:

  • Ultrafast Charger: Delivering an incredible 150 kW DC with a Type 2 socket for rapid, on-the-go power.
  • Fast Charger: Offering 43 kW AC with a Type 2 socket, alongside 50 kW DC CHAdeMO and Combo CCS sockets. The vast majority of these high-efficiency units are conveniently installed at local petrol stations.
  • Public Charger: Featuring 2 x 22 kW AC, complete with a double Type 2 socket designed for simultaneous use.
  • Wall-Box: Providing 22 kW AC, equipped with a single Type 2 socket for reliable, steady residential and commercial charging.

Today, Dubai proudly boasts a massive 2,223 EV charging stations, ensuring that range anxiety is a relic of the past for all motorists. Furthermore, the number of formally registered users taking full advantage of the Green Charger Initiative has rapidly grown to an impressive 23,600 highly satisfied customers. These dedicated DEWA Green Charger stations are available 24/7 at numerous key locations. Customers can quickly and easily locate them through the official DEWA website, their highly rated smart app, as well as via 14 additional integrated digital map platforms.

Aligning With Global Eco-Strategies

This spectacular infrastructure expansion directly supports several vital, long-term governmental frameworks that are actively redefining the future of urban infrastructure. The Green Charger Initiative strictly aligns with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030, which firmly mandates the heavy promotion of green, sustainable transport solutions and the broad, aggressive expansion of EV adoption. Ultimately, it also acts as a critical, foundational pillar for the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 and the broader UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative. With DEWA consistently steering the charge and continually upgrading its digital service offerings, the roads of tomorrow are undeniably electric.
